A legendary Chinese painting

Have you heard about a world-famous landscape painting named Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains? It was painted by Huang Gongwang, one of the Four Masters of the Yuan dynasty. Many experts think it is among the greatest masterpieces in Chinese art history. The story behind this painting is also very unusual.

你听说过那幅闻名世界的山水画《富春山居图》吗？它由元代 “元四家” 之一的黄公望所绘。许多专家认为，它是中国艺术史上最伟大的杰作之一。这幅画背后的故事也非同寻常。

Huang was almost eighty years old when he began working on Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains. He first made a rough drawing of the whole painting in one sitting. Over the following years, he then added parts to it whenever he was in the mood. The final painting was almost seven metres long and it was given to a friend as a present.

黄公望年近八十时才开始创作《富春山居图》。他先是一气呵成画出了整幅画的草稿，在之后的数年里，他只在兴致来时才会为画作添补细节。最终完成的画作近七米长，后来被当作礼物送给了一位友人。

Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains shows the beauty of the countryside of Jiangnan. The painting takes us on a breathtaking journey in the mountains. Along the way, we follow narrow paths, cross wooden bridges and pass along a wide river. If we look carefully, we can see people far away in the landscape. Some woodsmen are hidden among the trees. On the river, there is a man sitting alone on a boat. He is fishing. It looks like he is at one with nature, and we feel the same when we look at the painting.

《富春山居图》展现了江南乡村的秀丽风光。这幅画带我们开启一段惊心动魄的山间漫游：沿着小径穿行，走过木桥，又沿着宽阔的江河前行。细看之下，还能在远景里看到人影 —— 樵夫隐在林间，江上有位渔翁独坐船头垂钓，仿佛与自然融为一体。我们凝视这幅画时，也会生出同样的感受。

Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains was such an amazing painting that it was copied by hundreds of artists. The original painting changed owners many times. One of the owners liked it so much that he even put it next to himself while sleeping and eating.

《富春山居图》如此惊艳，引得数百位艺术家纷纷临摹。原作几经易主，其中一位藏家对它爱不释手，甚至在吃饭睡觉时都把画放在身边。

Sometime around 1650, something terrible happened: the famous painting was damaged by fire, and it was split into two pieces. The two parts went their separate ways. In the following centuries, they each experienced many dramatic events. One of them even became part of the Qianlong Emperor's art collection!

Fan Jinshi: the daughter of Dunhuang

樊锦诗：敦煌的女儿

There is a special place in Gansu Province in China. This place is called the Mogao Caves. They are also known as the Caves of a Thousand Buddhas.

在中国甘肃省有一个特别的地方。这个地方被称为莫高窟。它们也被称为千佛洞。

The Mogao Caves are one of the three most famous cave sites in China. They are located at the eastern foot of the Mingsha Hill. The first of these caves was dug in the 4th century CE. Famous for their beautiful wall paintings and statues of great artistic value, the caves were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1987.

莫高窟是中国最著名的三大石窟遗址之一。它们位于鸣沙山东麓。这些洞窟中的第一个开凿于公元4世纪。因其精美的壁画和极具艺术价值的雕像而闻名，莫高窟于1987年被列入联合国教科文组织世界遗产名录。

Fan Jinshi first visited Dunhuang when she was a university student. She saw the beautiful paintings in the Mogao Caves and fell in love with them at once. She began working as an archaeologist in Dunhuang after she graduated from Peking University. Her job was to study and protect the Dunhuang artworks.

樊锦诗第一次到访敦煌是在她大学时期。她看到了莫高窟里精美的壁画，并立刻爱上了它们。从北京大学毕业后，她开始在敦煌从事考古学家的工作。她的

One day when she was comparing old photos with new ones, she made a shocking discovery. Some caves were completely different, and some of the old artworks were gone. "Will this happen to all the paintings?" she wondered. Fan made up her mind: she had to save these cultural treasures.

Fan and her colleagues did everything they could: they limited the number of visitors, they put doors on the caves, and they did their best to control the temperature and humidity inside the caves to preserve the artworks. Unfortunately, these measures were not enough. The wall paintings needed better protection.

In 2003, Fan suggested that they make a digital database of the Dunhuang artworks. This led to the start of the Digital Dunhuang project, the purpose of which is to make digital copies of all the wall paintings and artworks in the Mogao Caves. These digital copies can be used for research, teaching and, most importantly, to let people from all walks of life all over the world see Dunhuang without having to visit the caves in person. Thanks to Fan's work, the Mogao Caves are now better protected and, at the same time, more easily enjoyed by people all over the world. It is no wonder that people call her “the daughter of Dunhuang”.

2003年，樊锦诗建议为敦煌艺术品建立一个数字数据库。这促使了“数字敦煌”项目的启动，其目的是为莫高窟所有的壁画和艺术品制作数字副本。这些数字副本可以用于研究、教学，以及最重要的是，让世界各地的各界人士无需亲临洞窟就能看到敦煌。多亏了樊锦诗的工作，莫高窟如今得到了更好的保护，同时也更容易被世界各地的人们所欣赏。难怪人们称她为“敦煌的女儿”。
