On March 2, 2026, China Merchants Shipbuilding Industry Group, together with its subsidiary China Merchants Heavy Industry (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd. , officially signed a construction contract with ASSO ANDROMEDA NAVIGATION COMPANY LIMITED, a subsidiary of ASSO Subsea, for one trenching support vessel (TSV).
The vessel, named Andromeda, is the second unit of its type ordered by ASSO following the initial vessel Avra. It is scheduled for delivery in the second quarter of 2028. Andromeda continues the top-tier design specifications of Avra and achieves world-leading performance across multiple dimensional metrics. With an overall length of 138.1 metres and a beam of 27.6 metres, the vessel is independently designed by CMHI(Shenzhen) and will be constructed at the CMI Mazhou Island Base. It is primarily dedicated to trenching operations in the floating offshore wind and submarine cable markets, while also featuring cable laying and maintenance capabilities.
The vessel is equipped with a dual-redundant DP-2 propulsion system and a 3 MW hybrid power system, delivering a bollard pull exceeding 180 tons. This enables simultaneous operation of heavy-duty trenching, plowing, and boulder removal equipment, maximizing operational efficiency. It is fitted with a 4,000-ton subdeck cable carousel and dual work decks, efficiently supporting diverse project types such as dynamic cable laying, floating offshore wind installation, and inter-array/export cable operations. The comprehensive suite of deck equipment—including a 150-ton offshore crane and dual heavy-duty A-frames—positions the vessel as a multifunctional power platform capable of covering the full lifecycle operations of subsea energy projects.
This additional order further validates ASSO Subsea’s high recognition of CMHI(Shenzhen)’s construction capabilities and strengthens the strategic partnership between the two parties. Moving forward, CMHI(Shenzhen) will continue to uphold lean construction principles, delivering higher-quality products and professional services to collaborate with global shipowners in driving continuous industry advancement.
