“KwanTeo” was founded as a non-profit cultural initiative in 2015. It dedicates itself to dual cartographic missions: excavating the multidimensional "Teochew World" while dynamically connecting the "Global Teochew" diaspora through transcultural navigation.
Film, as a medium transcending linguistic, temporal, and spatial boundaries, serves as our primary vehicle for collecting, researching, sharing, and producing Teochew cinema. By weaving together moving images, textual narratives, sonic landscapes, material culture, and everyday practices, KwanTeo embeds this self-sustaining cultural mosaic into the vibrant complexities of contemporary life. Within the interstices of reality, we cultivate experimental strategies that spark human connections and intellectual cross-pollination, offering grounded worldly wisdom for reimagining the very concept of "homeland."
Catering to diverse audiences, KwanTeo has organically developed two flagship annual programs: the community-oriented Spring Revels and the professional-focused Midsummer Laboratories. These initiatives form the bedrock of a self-renewing ecosystem sustained through four interconnected dimensions: cultural expeditions that digest heritage, film laboratories that produce narratives, cinema carnivals that share creations, and living archives that preserve legacies.
Over the past decade, KwanTeo has witnessed the creative evolution of over 100 Teochew filmmakers, actively participated in the production of 50+ feature and short films, and persistently shaped the self-narratives and historical consciousness of Teochew cinema through continuous curation, interpretation, and innovation.
