Founded in 1976, Shenzhen Art Museum ranks as the city’s earliest professional art exhibition institution. Originally named Shenzhen Exhibition Hall, it was officially renamed Shenzhen Art Museum in 1987. The inauguration of its new venue in 2023 marked a brand-new developmental milestone for this cultural establishment that has grown alongside the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone. Since opening, the museum has received generous donations from artists, collectors and people from all walks of society, with more than 880 works of art accessioned into its permanent collection to form the institution’s most treasured cultural assets.
These donated pieces span diverse categories including Chinese ink painting, oil painting, watercolor, printmaking, paper-cut, poster, sculpture, sketch and stone rubbings, with creation dates stretching from the Northern Wei Dynasty to the present and origins covering both domestic and international art circles. Beyond an assembly of fine art, they embody sincere goodwill: behind every work stands a donor who devotes their artistic fruits to public cultural causes with great generosity.
Drawing on the selected works from donation to the new building of Shenzhen Art Museum, this exhibition is structured into five thematic sections: “Ink Heritage and Innovation,” “Vibrant Colors of Today,” “Imprints of Time,” “Boundless Reflections,” and “Tide Rising over the Greater Bay Area.” It showcases contemporary evolutions of traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy alongside the expressive charm of painting in Western styles; revisits historical memories embedded in print carvings while incorporating diversified mediums into artistic narratives from an inclusive perspective. A dedicated segment featuring Shenzhen-themed artworks is specially arranged to build a cultural dialogue between the museum and the city.
The exhibition serves as a sincere tribute to all donors and an open invitation of art for local citizens. On the occasion of the museum’s 50th anniversary, we present this show as a commemorative gift and take the collection as a cultural bridge. May the grace of art settle permanently in Shenzhen and the glow of culture illuminate the entire Greater Bay Area.
