2026年本科生毕业典礼上的发言

Chairman and Professor Lo, President Xu, respected faculty, distinguished guests, proud families, online audiences, and above all, fellow graduates, good morning!

I am Lin Caiwei from Ling College, majoring Finance from the School of Management and Economics. First, let’s give ourselves a round of applause, for four years of hard work and adventure!

My story with CUHK-Shenzhen began in high school. I was born in Shenzhen. During my second year at Shenzhen Middle School（深圳中学）, our class visited The University’s library. All around me, students were concentrated in books and laptops in a focus that looks less like pressure and more like purpose. And then, a question struck me, what kind of person do I want to become? My parents left their hometown in their twenties to come to Shenzhen with little but conviction. They always told me: don’t be afraid to be yourself and to try everything. That afternoon in the library, I made up my mind to be recognized by this university. So, as you can see, here I am.

Before I share the three lessons this university has taught me, I want to say: thanks to CUHK-Shenzhen’s world-class education, I got the great opportunity to continue post graduate studies at MIT, and also got the offer from other top universities like Oxford and Cambridge.

So the first lesson that CUHK-Shenzhen taught me is, we had the freedom, and the courage, to become more than one type of person.

I started a band, and over four years, we performed for audiences of over four thousand people, and this year wrote an original graduation song for the Class of 2026, as you heard before the ceremony. Also, I became the lead MC for school events, learning to hold a room, to read a crowd of thousands, and to improvise in a second. What’s more, I stepped behind the camera and directed our graduation music videos. Every single one of these attempts taught me something different. CUHK-Shenzhen gave me the permission to try, to fail, and to discover exactly what kind of person do I want to become.

Second: at CUHK-Shenzhen, we built our resilience, not just in ourselves, but in the world around us.

Resilience, as President Xu has reminded us, is about continuing, slowly, steadily, without stopping. I found my own resilience in all-English presentations, in the group projects, and in the case competitions.

But was that enough? After spending an afternoon in an orphanage on Wutong Mountain, watching a little girl work through a math problem with nothing but her own stubborn concentration, I realized: a society is only as resilient as the people within it who have been given the least. So from that point on, I stopped thinking about resilience as something I was building for myself. I tried to find the missing footholds: designing a platform for women who had no voice in a service, building a monitoring system for elderly patients who have been given the least, and also co-creating an AI investment advisory tool at Stanford University to bring financial literacy to people. Each one reminded me: resilience is never only about myself, it is about the whole society.

Most importantly, at CUHK-Shenzhen, we found our life-long passion.

I spent four years finding out my passion. I tried five internships across venture capital, private equity, and investment banking, all in the healthcare industry. Slowly, through all of that trying, I want to enter the field of healthcare investing.

Every investment decision in healthcare is a decision about the lives yet to be saved. I want to stand at the crossroads of finance, artificial intelligence, and biomedical science, and use that position to push the frontier forward. I believe that with the right capital, the right technology, and the right will, we can conquer diseases that generations before us accepted as permanent. And one day, I hope to carry what I have learned overseas back to China’s healthcare industry, and back to CUHK-Shenzhen.

This is not my own story. One of my friend will soon begin an Operations Research PhD at Cornell University. Another friend has just received an offer from Huawei. One of my co-director is launching his own company. We are all heading in different directions, and every single one of those directions is exactly right.

So, Class of 2026: dare to explore and try everything, build your resilience, and find your passion. Then, please allow me to switch to Chinese to express our gratitude.

亲爱的老师们、家长们、同学们：

四年，我们大胆探索、培养韧性、找到热爱。今天，我们有太多感谢的话想说。

感谢老师们的耐心与远见，感谢父母的守候，感谢同学们的陪伴，见证了我们一次次跌倒、又一次次重新站起来的模样。

犹记得高二的时候，我第一次走进大学图书馆，看到徐扬生校长的书法楹联：“哪怕整个世界都黑暗了下来，这里永远有一盏灯为你亮着。”今天，当我们走出校门，我希望我们也把它读作我们对世界的承诺：无论走到哪里，做那一盏不灭的灯。

同学们，我们生逢快速变化、充满机遇与挑战的AI时代，愿我们扛起肩上的重担，无论在哪一个领域，都闪闪发光，都做推动世界向前一步的人！

2026届的同学们，毕业快乐！谢谢大家！
