Okokume (born Laura Mas Hernandez, 1985, Barcelona, Spain) has established a unique position in the international contemporary art scene with her highly distinctive artistic language. Taking emotion as her core, she blends Eastern and Western cultural vocabularies to construct richly meaningful artistic fields. The "Cosmic Girl", born in 2017, has not only become the central icon of her creative lineage but has also injected a new spiritual dimension into contemporary "Lowbrow Art" through its groundbreaking expression.
Cosmic Girl emerged at a pivotal moment in the artist's life narrative, serving as a concrete manifestation of her inner spiritual world. This interstellar being, enveloped in a soft glow, is both a projection of self-awareness and a collective psychological metaphor for human loss and companionship. With an autobiographical undercurrent, the work conceals profound insights into individual existence, societal transformation, and ecological imbalance beneath its gentle, bright, and intricately layered textures; those fairy-tale-like, dazzling visual surfaces are by no means mere aesthetic presentations. The extension of every brushstroke and the layering of every texture represent a deconstruction and reconstruction of inner spiritual trauma—within the warm, soft texture lies a firm and serene healing power. It reflects not only the curiosity and contemplation from the depths of childhood but also points to the eternal themes of hope and rebirth. For this landing at Shenzhen Bay Mixc, this interstellar imagery temporarily departs from the vast cosmos, integrating into the primal landscape woven by the Shenzhen Bay waterfront and wetlands as a guardian of both city and nature. Using painting and immersive visual installations as her media, Okokume endows Cosmic Girl with the spiritual core of protecting the Earth, enabling her to engage in a spiritual dialogue with the four natural elements: water, wind, fire, and earth. The constructed "Cosmic Garden" subtly echoes and philosophically resonates with the native ecology of Shenzhen Bay. This exhibition is both a spiritual pause within the urban bustle and a profound artistic response to ecological themes. It guides visitors, through movement and contemplation, to ponder the symbiotic relationship between urban civilization, ecological fragility, and interstellar imagination. It instills a serene artistic force into Mixc's public cultural space and, with a gentle yet steadfast spiritual glimmer, awakens in the public deeper reflection on the sustenance of our home and its future prospect.
