As the years turn and new chapters unfold, we welcome this joyful moment of bidding farewell to the Year of the Snake and ushering in the Year of the Horse. On behalf of all CMU parents in Shenzhen and the Greater Bay Area, the Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) Shenzhen Parent Committee extends our warmest New Year greetings and most heartfelt wishes to you all!
As parents, we are both our children’s strongest support system and dedicated advocates of CMU’s home–school partnership. Over the years, the Shenzhen Parent Committee has remained committed to building bridges of communication between families and the university. Through online sharing sessions and in-person gatherings, we have witnessed the sincere bonds of mutual support and companionship among parents as we walk this journey together.
At the beginning of 2024, during a visit to Shenzhen by experienced parents from the North American parent community, the committee organized an exchange forum to address concerns related to employment and visa policies. By sharing professional insights and relevant data, the event empowered parents and strengthened channels for communication and mutual support.
In early 2025, the committee partnered with local enterprises to organize on-site visits for parents, helping broaden development pathways for our students. In July of the same year, the CMU Shenzhen Parent Committee, together with Tencent, hosted a landmark Greater Bay Area CMU alumni and parent networking event at the Binhai Building. More than 140 CMU alumni-both recent graduates and established professionals-and their families attended, with over 60 guests joining the post-event dinner.
The gathering introduced newly admitted undergraduate and master’s students and their parents to CMU’s strengths in teaching and research, as well as domestic and international employment trends. It helped new students transition smoothly into their study-abroad experience and explore their academic and career directions with greater confidence.
Alumni and leaders from Tencent, along with alumni and parents from Silicon Valley and other parts of the United States, shared their growth experiences at CMU and their heartfelt wishes for incoming students, engaging in lively and meaningful discussions with attendees.
We also invited industry experts to interpret development trends in fields such as AI and computer science, guiding students to pursue deeper exploration based on their interests. In addition, we welcomed the mother of an outstanding alumna to share her experiences in entrepreneurship and parenting, further shaping the CMU parent community into an open, supportive, and growth-oriented learning platform and laying a strong foundation for nurturing outstanding students.
During CMU Giving Day this past December, we sincerely thank the Shenzhen parent group and the global Chinese parent community for their enthusiastic participation and generous support. Your efforts not only helped the Office of International Development reach its fundraising goal ahead of schedule, but also enabled multiple projects to unlock matching gifts successfully.
All of this has been made possible through the selfless dedication and continued leadership of past Parent Committee members. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to former committee chair Ms. Daisy and the volunteer team she led for their passion, commitment, and wisdom. We are equally grateful to every CMU parent who has supported us quietly and steadfastly-because of you, this shared journey has always been filled with light.
We deeply understand that the care spanning oceans and the messages sent across time zones are transformed, through the sustained efforts and thoughtful succession of Parent Committees over the years, into the most steady and enduring source of warmth on our children’s path toward their dreams. At the beginning of 2026, the Shenzhen Parent Committee successfully completed its leadership transition. The new co-chairs-Caroline Zhang, Sherry Lv, Laura Zhu, and Shirley Deng-will carry forward the spirit of selfless service and the valuable experience of past committees. Together with the CMU Office of International Development, the Shenzhen Alumni Association, and our volunteer parents, they will continue contributing to the CMU community in the Greater Bay Area.
