ESSENTIAL PRINCIPLES: PROMOTING CURIOSITY AND EVOKE CHILDLIKE INNOCENCE
Children, unlike adults, live in the present and experience each moment very intensely. Sights, sounds, scale, touch, textures, colours, shapes and patterns hold delights and surprises that adults often overlook in their rush to keep up with daily tasks and demands. Children’s curiosity needs to be encouraged. An amazed child will grow into a marvelling adult, for whom the thirst for discovery and learning never extinguishes.
Illustration of the Overall Design Concept
At the very heart of the design approach, was a desire to pay close attention to what is seen and experienced from a child’s perspective. By embedding this sense of wonder into every corner of the new building, the design aims to encourage children’s natural curiosity and delight and cultivate their unique and joyful view of the world, whilst at the same time providing the means for adults to fondly recall their childhood, and to interact with the environment in a similarly social, playful, and collaborative way.

SPACE PLANNING: CLINICAL, RESEARCH AND LEARNING “COLLIDE”
This project presents a unique opportunity to co-locate multiple functions associated with paediatric healthcare. The design strongly encourages a meaningful collaboration and meeting of minds between clinical staff, research staff and students, and provide the excellent working environment to attract and retain the best talent in this field.
The 3D planning of the building is developed with the key principle of encouraging collaboration between clinical staff, researchers, and students. Research is placed on the same floors as inpatient wards, providing proximity to patients with a ‘lab bench to bedside’ approach. At the junction of the inpatient and research zones, a ‘collaboration zone’ is located which houses formal and informal education and social spaces for staff to mingle, share and learn together.
A Collaboration Zone Located at the Junction of the Ward and Research Zones
To reduce vertical movements for staff and increase the efficiency of accessing to certain zones, various functions are located on a single floor. For example, patient bedrooms, research labs, staff common rooms, offices and education spaces can all be found on a single floor. High volume outpatient clinics are placed at the lower floors to reduce lift traffic, while staff living spaces are located at the upper floors to decrease the interference of different user groups.

DESIGN STRATEGY:A HEALING EXPERIENCE THAT IS FULL OF FUN
03-1
Bring the Spirit of the Park to the Hospital
Children are innate explorers and love to experience the sights, scents, sounds, and textures of the outdoors. Nature provides countless opportunities for discovery, creativity, problem-solving, and STEM education. Being in nature can have positive effects on people’s health and wellbeing, especially for children.
Rooftop Garden
Therefore, the design seeks to incorporate the natural environment and ensure easy accessibility to the outdoors, fresh air, and sunlight. Bringing the park to the Hospital forms the basis of the landscape concept. By using the structure of a tree as the inspiration for the three landscape zones, the design further integrates natural environment with the Hospital environment. This approach reflects the unique and positive role that nature plays in our lives and its ability to promote healing and overall wellness.
A Natural Framework
The ground floor that radiates outwards will be a large-scale space that draws people inwards. It’s an urban “living room” full of colour, positive energy and delight. The colour graphic applied is a playful reminder of the nearby park and the joy that brings to the people of Shenzhen.
At the heart of the building lies the wondrous “Secret Garden” known only to the people inside the building. It provides a safe shelter for the children, their parents and medical staff during healing and respite. By increasing the planting, lighting area and permeability, the interior space also creates a closeness to nature.

Weaving Colours, Graphics, And Installations into Stories
Seeing things from a kid’s point of view means relating to their imagination and dimension. Furniture and objects in the Hospital will size down when required for accessibility and scale up when provoking awe and excitement when interacting with kids. By strategically and thoughtfully placing wonders and discoveries along the visiting journey, the overall design seeks to create a positive and unforgettable hospital experience for children of all ages, which is reminiscent of a fun day at the park.

The Nurse Station&Waiting Area of L2 Child HealthCare
Bright, warm, and spacious spaces can help relieve the emotional stress of children and create a relaxed atmosphere. Children are curious by nature, and they tend to explore the world around them by touching. Therefore, decorative materials and furniture with the highest safety levels and soft and comfortable materials are of a significant importance in the Hospital’s interior design.

Functional Colour System
Acknowledging the colours from the existing icons and logo of the Hospital, the interior spaces derive these colours as a key visual element to develop a cohesive design approach on the whole campus. The four primary colours of the logo and graphics identified will be carried out in the wayfinding in the new building.
The Hospital’s Existing Logo and its Primary Colour System
Colour carries emotional perception and evokes people’s reactions. It is also proven that colour is therapeutic and can provoke feelings about a place. From the four primary colours of the Hospital graphics, the scheme introduces the second set which are the pastel versions of the primary colours. The design strives to apply colours creatively. By combining multiple colours, three main colours are established as accents to complete the palette.
Applying Colours Creatively
In terms of colour zoning, the design identifies three main functional areas: The Outpatient, The Inpatient, and The Staff Zones. Each of them will use in combination of the main and accent colours. Warm colour tones, e.g., white and pastel green, will be used as the main colours in the space. Green will be seen mostly on walls, floors of Patient and Staff Areas, e.g., Patient Rooms, Nurse Stations, and Receptions. The green colour will connect the interior with the outside landscape and with nature. The accent colours instead are designed for furniture, signage, and graphics, bringing a playful and happy touch of the typical children’s world.

Healing and Play
The design seeks to create an extraordinary hospital experience for children of all ages, building an approachable and relaxed atmosphere which helps strengthen a positive and friendly image of medical treatment in the young patients’ minds. From entering the forest, seeing the magic tree, playing along the tree trunks, to staying in the bird house on the branches……through the interior design, an ordinary medical treatment journey could be reimagined as a downsizing adventure in the forest.
L2 Atrium Waiting Area
Research has shown that play and games are essential for children’s healthy development. Children do not stop playing simply because they fall ill. Therefore, play must be an integrated part of the overall design of the spaces and experience. This entails not only providing play areas and playtime but ensuring that play is fully integrated into the entire treatment process. Play can also help the child accept illness and treatment, and furthermore facilitate their understanding of healing, for example, when a child is allowed to treat another person or a toy animal. So, play must be a common thread running through the entire stay in the Hospital.

Designed For Daily Life
Daily life is the basis of our reality. Hospitalisation must not lead to a sense of stagnation. The world inside and outside must be in harmony. Family wards make it possible to pursue daily routines and activities. The patients’ families can prepare and eat food, watch a film in the cinema or relax on a sofa and watch television together, like what they do in their homes.

The building design also celebrates the ground-breaking clinical, science, and research activities that will happen within a cluster of social and interaction spaces for staff at the northeast corner. This will also serve as a social window connecting to the park. Various spaces with flexible functions for gathering and discussion are designed for clinical staff, researchers, and students. In doing so, collaboration and connection is emphasised for the space users.

The new building will extend the existing hospital to the west, expanding clinical services and adding new facilities. It is essential to ensure the campus is handled as a united ‘whole’ system with robust connections between each building, which optimises hospital operations as well as creates a positive influence on the overall experience for all patients and visitors.
